Teaching is a job that many of us already had ideas about when we came to URI. All of us went to school for many years leading up to our time here in college. We all have an idea about what teachers affected us the most, what makes us like teachers, and what teachers did that was most effective in our learning. I know that when i was a senior in high school I started to pay more and more attention to teaching styles and what was most effective in the class. My personality lends itself to being patient, understanding, but also tough. Students need to know that what they are doing is important and can help them in the future. I think being tough is necessary, but not unfair. I think that if students know that what you are making them do has their best in mind they will be more likely to buy in to your ideas. Throughout my years of schooling i have come to find that it is the tough teachers that care about your success and are fair are the teachers i respect the most and work the hardest for. I want to be a teacher that help students understand biology but also to mentor my students and help with many of the decisions they must make during these high school years. I know that when I was in high school I made plans for the future but I didn't fully understand why I was doing things and how different decisions can affect my future and career. There are many skills students should getting from high school that can help them after they graduate and many of these skills should make them successful college students.
When I got into college I realized that exams were the most important way of testing your knowledge and that information truly builds on itself so you must stay up on your work. I want my students to learn the skills necessary to make them truly successful and build on their understanding. I think that teaching students the correct way to study, learn and work is undervalued which is why some students who did well in high school have a slow start in college. My classroom will have a strong focus on preparing every student for college because in our society it is becoming more and more necessary to have a degree. For those students without college aspirations many of the tools that I want to instill in my students translates to many aspects of life. Some students will say that they aren't going to college and instead are getting involved with a trade but they don't understand the learning and classes that goes on when being licensed in the different trades.
I can be laid back but I can also be very demanding and I definitely expect a lot from students. I hope to make my classroom a place of exploration, learning, and growth. I want students to enjoy them selves but I don't want the class to get to a point where some students education is being put on the back burner for out spoken disruptive students. I think its important to encourage everyone to try their hardest and part of everyone trying their hardest will come from me explaining the relevance of what we do in class. In the end I want my class to have an affect on every student and be an asset to them as they move forward. I intend to use what I have learned at URI to better the students I teach. I think that preparing students for further education is one of the most important things a teacher can do to help a student. It is easy with everything that happens during kids high school years to forget why they are there and where they are going. By helping students realize how practicing different skills can make them more effective learners and students they will be more likely to buy in. Through each school year i will give various tips for students to use during studying like rewrite your notes, talk through the concepts out loud, and work with a study group.
